WebKit AI Tool Use Policy

AI tools are allowed and encouraged in WebKit development. Developers can use AI tools to learn, ask questions, and gain a deeper understanding. Regardless of the tools you use, your work is in your name, and it represents you. The policy for AI tool use in WebKit is centered around human understanding.

You should have and demonstrate an understanding of all contributions that come in your name such as PRs, comments, bug reports, messages, and e-mails. If you are stretching your own skills by working in an area you are unfamiliar with, you are expected to list any collaborators or use of AI.

There must be a contributor in the development loop for every pull request. Every PR must be reviewed by a human before review is requested from another person. The contributor who posts the PR is responsible for understanding the PR. In rare circumstances if a developer needs to get feedback on a PR that they have very little understanding of, they may do so by making the PR a draft and adding an appropriate bracketed prefix indicating that the PR is not intended for general review.

To ensure quality and respect the reviewer’s time, contributors are expected to test all PRs to confirm that they work as intended. Contributors are also expected to confirm that every regression test added with a PR fails without the change and passes with it, unless the PR is noted as a speculative fix.

Our contributors act with integrity, and we expect the bar to stay high whether or not AI tools are used.
